“BIG OIL” AND FOSSIL FUEL THREATEN NY/NJ COAST

ExxonMobil’s proposal is in the early stages, and the company has provided only minimal information.  A formal application is expected in spring 2009.

These are the details that are known at this time and the concerns:

  • Proposed for 20 miles off Manasquan Inlet, New Jersey, and about 30 miles off New York
  • A new sub-sea pipeline will connect to new and existing onshore pipeline systems and will destroy important fish habitat
  • The floating terminal, which will receive and store LNG, is experimental technology, making the ocean waters off NY/NJ Big Oil's latest "lab rat."

Further, the technology ExxonMobil is proposing has been rejected in other parts of the country.  Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) vetoed a similar project as it "would result in significant and unmitigated impacts to California’s air quality and marine life."  Also, New York and Connecticut officials objected to a similar LNG port proposed for Long Island Sound, citing environmental concerns for the sensitive ecosystem.
